Act to Support Reauthorization of the Healthy Food Financing Initiative!
In 2009, PolicyLink, The Food Trust, and Reinvestment Fund partnered with public health advocates, community development practitioners, and other stakeholders from across the country to raise awareness about the inequitable access to fresh, healthy foods and call for federal action to address this critical problem. The campaign led to the creation federal Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI).
Over $220 million in HFFI grants have been awarded to CDFIs and CDCs since 2011 by the Department of Treasury and Health and Human Services, bringing jobs, economic development and healthy food access to low-income communities across the country. HFFI has invested in grocery stores, farmers markets, food hubs, co-ops and other businesses enterprises that increase the supply of and the demand for healthy foods in low-income, underserved rural and urban communities, creating thousands of jobs and improving access to healthy foods.
In 2014, Congress passed the Farm Bill establishing HFFI at USDA and authorizing up to $125 million for the program. Most recently, in January 2017 USDA announced the selection of Reinvestment Fund to serve as the agency's HFFI National Fund Manager.
Take action today! With the 2018 Farm Bill reauthorization process underway, your support is critical to help protect, strengthen, and fund HFFI at USDA. These successes would not have been possible without the tireless advocacy and collaboration of diverse stakeholders committed to ensuring that all communities have equitable access to healthy food.
