POLICYLINK ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF MILLY HAWK DANIEL AS
DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS;
SUCCEEDS LONGTIME DIRECTOR
JANET DEWART BELL

New York, NY:  Milly Hawk Daniel, currently associate director of communications, will become PolicyLink communications director, effective September 1, 2005. Daniel succeeds current director Janet Dewart Bell, who has resigned to become visiting research professor at the University of Pittsburgh. "Milly is an excellent choice. Her appointment ensures that PolicyLink will continue to maintain its effective and creative communications work on behalf of the organization and its many diverse community and national partners," comments Angela Glover Blackwell, founder and CEO of PolicyLink.

"Janet has been communications director since PolicyLink began in 1999," states Blackwell, "and has used her extraordinary talents and experience to guide our efforts in lifting up what works by developing a communications agenda that is vital to the success of our work. She has been integral to the development of the organization’s signature work helping its partner organizations and coalitions implement effective communications strategies and campaigns." Blackwell credits Bell with the development of strategies to enhance awareness of PolicyLink and such issues as wealth building in low-income communities of color, increasing affordable housing, health in community, and equity in public investments.

Daniel joined PolicyLink three years ago and treasures "the wonderful partnership Janet and I have shared. I am eager to continue our work in using communications to build support for policies that enable everyone to participate and prosper." A former communications director for Girl Scouts of the USA, Daniel has over 25 years of strategic communications experience, and has been a communications consultant to many nonprofit organizations. At PolicyLink, she has been a key strategist providing publications and communications support to the Massachusetts-based Action for Regional Equity; affordable housing campaigns in California, New York City, and Washington, DC; and in expanding media relations efforts for PolicyLink and its partners.

Bell’s position at the University of Pittsburgh is an interdisciplinary appointment to conduct research at the School of Law and the Center on Race and Social Problems. "Although I am excited about the opportunity at Pitt, I will miss my PolicyLink friends and colleagues, a stellar staff doing great work. It has been a privilege to be a part of this special organization," says Bell.

PolicyLink is a national nonprofit research, communications, capacity building, and advocacy organization dedicated to advancing policies to achieve economic and social equity based on the wisdom, voice, and experience of local constituencies, with offices in Oakland, CA and New York, NY.
