Asthma ranks among the most prevalent diseases suffered disproportionately by people of color. Most current strategies to reduce asthma focus on its clinical management, but the alarming rates of asthma among African Americans and Latinos will not decline until communities organize to reduce the toxins that exacerbate this debilitating condition. This issue brief discusses how environmental risk factors, such as industrial air pollution, pesticide exposure, and poor air quality in schools and homes, can be tackled through a strong, community-centered approach that actively engages hospitals, public health clinics, schools, faith-based institutions, community-based organizations, and local leaders.
