The regional equity movement seeks to ensure that all communities can participate in and benefit from economic growth and activity throughout each metropolitan region. This includes being able to access quality affordable housing, good schools, living wage jobs, public transit, open space, and healthy foods.
Regional Equity and Smart Growth: Opportunities for Advancing Social and Economic Justice in America, commissioned by the Funders' Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities, is the second edition of the Network's first translation paper. In 1999, the Funders’ Network released its first translation paper, written by PolicyLink, on the subject of social equity and smart growth. Five years later, this edition looks back at advancements in the field of regional equity. This translation paper discusses the emergence and evolution of the regional equity concept and its use by diverse groups across the country, highlighting the best practices of leading practitioners and grantmakers in the movement. It examines four arenas in which regional equity can be advanced – living near opportunity; linking to opportunity; promoting equitable public investment; and making all neighborhoods stable, healthy, and livable. The paper identifies next steps and potential resources to strengthen this growing movement.
