Advancements for Housing Equity under Attack – Tell Your Representative to Vote No TODAY on Gosar and Garrett Amendments

As the House votes on the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (T-HUD) appropriations bill this week, two conservative lawmakers are offering harmful amendments that undermine fair housing. Rep. Paul Gosar’s and Rep. Scott Garrett’s amendments to H.R. 2577 would prohibit HUD from implementing and enforcing two measures vital to fair housing:

1) the long-awaited Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule (AFFH) rule, and
2) the disparate impact standards in the Fair Housing Act.

The vote on these amendments will happen TODAY, Tuesday June 8, making it imperative that you call or email your representative now!

The AFFH rule, soon to be released by HUD, will help cities, counties, states, and housing authorities advance housing opportunities, overcome historic patterns of racial and other segregation, and improve coordinated public investment in areas of highly concentrated poverty. Rep. Paul Gosar’s amendment to H.R. 2577, however, would prohibit HUD from implementing, administering, or enforcing the AFFH rule.

At the same time, Rep. Scott Garrett’s amendment H.R. 2577 would remove all funding for enforcing the crucial disparate impact standards of the Fair Housing Act, which have allowed victims of discrimination to challenge obstacles that limit the availability and enjoyment of housing for people based on race, color, national origin, religion, disability status, familial status, and gender.

The Gosar and Garrett amendments would further racial disparities and racial discrimination. PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE NOW and tell him or her to vote NO on these amendments.

Find your Representative’s contact information, and a sample message to send to your representative is included below. Further information on the AFFH rule is available here.

Dear Representative ________,

I am writing to urge you to vote NO on the Gosar AFFH and Garrett Disparate Impact amendments. The vote is scheduled to take place TODAY, Tuesday, June 9, during the T-HUD appropriations proceedings. If passed, these amendments will prohibit HUD from implementing, administering, or enforcing crucial fair and affordable housing measures.

Too often, where you live determines where you can work, the type of schools your children can attend, and whether you have access to health care and other vital community resources. The Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule, soon to be released by HUD, will support cities, counties, states, and housing authorities to conduct assessments of fair housing that will more effectively focus federal resources towards connecting people to the opportunities they need to improve their economic circumstances. Rep. Paul Gosar’s amendment to H.R. 2577, however, would prohibit HUD from implementing, administering, or enforcing the AFFH rule.

At the same time, Rep. Scott Garrett’s amendment H.R. 2577 is seeking to remove all funding for enforcing the crucial disparate impact standards of the Fair Housing Act, which have allowed victims of discrimination to challenge obstacles that limit the availability and enjoyment of housing for people based on race, color, national origin, religion, disability status, familial status, and gender.

The Gosar and Garrett amendments would further racial disparities and racial discrimination, so I urge you to VOTE NO on these amendments.
