Position Overview

PolicyLink is seeking a Communications and Outreach Strategist to implement our communications and dissemination strategy for the National Equity Atlas tool and forthcoming San Francisco Bay Area Equity Atlas tool. The strategist will be responsible for designing and implementing outreach, training, and communications activities that increase the use of our data tools for policy change and advocacy, increase the visibility and reach of the Atlas, and ensure the successful launch of the Bay Area Equity Atlas. This position is an opportunity to connect community advocates and organizers and policymakers with our data and to strengthen their campaigns to advance racial and economic equity.

The National Equity Atlas is a first-of-its-kind data tool to track, measure, and make the case for inclusive growth. Produced in partnership with the Program for Environmental and Regional Equity at the University of Southern California (PERE), the Atlas puts deeply disaggregated data on indicators of demographic change, racial and economic inclusion, and the potential economic benefits of equity in the hands of community leaders working to build more equitable communities. The Atlas team is also partnering with The San Francisco Foundation to launch a Bay Area Equity Atlas tool (in January 2019) that provides similar equity indicators, data displays, and analyses for the nine-county Bay Area region. With these data tools, our goals are to strengthen the public conversation around the necessity of equity for our collective future, build a shared understanding of the current state of equity, and equip policymakers, community advocates, and changemakers with the data they need to advance solutions.

The ideal candidate is passionate about connecting grassroots organizers and advocates with critical data and research that strengthens their campaigns, enjoys using data to tell powerful stories that advance policy change, and is skilled at message development as well as organizing and conducting in-person and virtual trainings for community-based organizations.  

Position Responsibilities

  • For both the National Equity Atlas and Bay Area Equity Atlas (once launched):
    • Work closely with the team to implement an overarching communications and messaging strategy, as well as a companion community engagement strategy, for increasing the use of the tools.
    • Produce monthly webinars.
    • Design and execute a social media strategy.
    • Track and measure website and social media metrics to inform strategy and continuous improvement.
    • Maintain the Atlas websites.
    • Create content and coordinate monthly e-newsletters for the National Equity Atlas and Bay Area Equity Atlas.
    • Produce short data analyses and compelling data displays (e.g., blog posts for "Chart of the Week").
    • Manage the production of video tutorials describing how to use the site.
    • Develop slide presentations for webinars, meetings, and conferences.
    • Create and maintain marketing materials, such as brochures and postcards.
    • Coordinate with the Program and Communications teams, and with external partners as needed.
  • For the Bay Area Equity Atlas, implement in-person user engagement and outreach strategies (meetups, user conferences, tabling, presentations, etc.)

Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of basic statistics, data analysis methods, and data sources such as the US Census.
  • Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of data to draw conclusions, and experience writing about data and analyses.
  • Experience organizing and conducting trainings for community-based organizations.
  • Experience writing and coordinating organizational newsletters.
  • Experience developing and monitoring/evaluating social media strategies/campaigns and managing organizational social media platforms, including Twitter.
  • Experience implementing communications strategies for mission-oriented organizations is desirable.
  • Passionate about the work of the National Equity Atlas team and our mission of advancing racial and economic equity and inclusive prosperity.
  • A positive, solutions-oriented attitude, and an ability to be flexible and work under pressure.
  • Self-starter with excellent time management skills and ability to effectively work on multiple projects.
  • Experience with community organizing and policy advocacy and working with low-income communities of color.
  • Experience with graphic design a plus
