Get Involved

A movement for equity is building in America. A broad coalition of advocates, activists, and decision-makers are coming together, determined to make sure all people can live in communities of opportunity -- where all Americans have access to good schools, affordable housing, clean air, safe parks, quality jobs in the green economy, and sound infrastructure from reliable public transit to well maintained bridges, water systems, highways, and roads.

A few ways to get involved:

JOIN Us at the One Nation Working Together March on Washington

We must get America back to work. We must pull America back together.

Please march with us on October 2, 2010 (along with dozens of allies, including the NAACP, SEIU, National Council of La Raza, and Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights) to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to achieve the American Dream—a secure job, a safe home and a quality education.

Want help getting plugged into the march? Email Kisasi@policylink.org or call (510) 663-4340 to contact Kisasi Brooks of our Demand Equity Now initiative.

It is time for equity groups to join forces to get America working again.

Support Full Funding for Promise Neighborhoods. Meet with your Congressional Members During Recess:

Congress is home for summer recess – but our work to maximize funding for Promise Neighborhoods is just getting geared up.

As you know from attending one of our Promise Neighborhoods webinars, your voice is crucial in making sure millions of children benefit from this innovative, proven program.

How can you help?

Meet your Senator or Representative face-to-face and tell them, "Every child deserves a Promise Neighborhood. Please fully fund this proven program."

Support a Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI):

The President's FY 2011 Budget Proposal for HFFI requested $345 million dollars from three agencies - USDA, Treasury, and HHS -- to provide loan and grant financing to attract grocery stores and other fresh food retail to underserved urban, suburban, and rural areas; and renovate and expand existing stores so they can provide the healthy foods that communities want and need.

UPDATE

As of July 29, 2010, relevant appropriation subcommittees in the House and Senate have marked up their bills for fiscal year 2011, and we are thrilled to report they have allocated the following for the Healthy Food Financing Initiative. (See allocations.)

There are additional steps needed to ensure that the Healthy Food Financing is funded. Please keep calling on Congress to fully support HFFI.

California Healthy Food Financing Initiative

The California Healthy Food Financing Initiative, sponsored by Assembly Speaker John Perez (D-Los Angeles), would eventually set up a system to help grocers and farmers markets open new locations in poor neighborhoods and help existing corner stores expand to stock more fresh food.
