Senior Associate-Health Team (New York, NY)

Program Description:

The PolicyLink Center for Health and Place weaves research and action into policy initiatives to ensure that everyone—especially those in low-income and communities of color—can live, work, and play in healthy environments. The Center works with a host of partners on efforts to push for policies that allow people to live in communities of opportunity. One such initiative—the national Healthy Eating, Active Living Convergence Partnership—is a collaborative of national funders seeking to create Healthy People in Healthy Places (HPHP) through multifield, equity-focused efforts focused on policy and environmental change. One of the Convergence Partnership’s core strategies is to promote and support such efforts in the field, recognizing that regional convergence initiatives are essential in advancing a national movement towards HPHP. The steering committee includes representatives from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, The California Endowment, the Kresge Foundation, and Nemours. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) serves as a technical advisor to the Partnership. PolicyLink serves as Project Director working to coordinate the various efforts underway and assist in strategic thinking about future goals and strategies.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a resource and support for national convergence activities.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to regional convergence initiatives.
  • Track and assess national and regional trends and model policy and environmental change strategies that improve food and physical activity environments.
  • Supervise staff as appropriate and work with partner organizations to coordinate activities and events.
  • Build relationships with staff at foundations and other relevant groups to foster connections and communications between national partnership and regional convergence sites.
  • Conduct interviews to identify policy opportunities and assess strategic directions.
  • Create and oversee tracking and monitoring systems to manage TA requests, inquiries, and outreach efforts.
  • Develop policy briefs and other written documents; conduct trainings as needed.
  • Travel approximately twice a month.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Experience in public health and/or public policy, particularly in the areas of social determinants of health, health disparities and inequities, food and physical activity environments, and other related fields. Minimum of 7 years of professional experience.
  • Master’s degree in public health, planning, or policy (e.g., MPH, MPP, MPA).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and analytical skills.
  • Experience in advocacy, technical assistance, writing reports and articles, public speaking, and conducting trainings.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to work as a self-starting member of a team.

Associate Director – Health (Oakland, CA)

This professional level position─available immediately—is an exciting opportunity to join the staff at PolicyLink.

PolicyLink is working on local, state and national policies to improve access to healthy foods in low-income communities and communities of color. This includes advocacy for policies which support the development of all sorts of healthy food retail from new or redesigned grocery stores, to improved corner stores, to coops and community supported agriculture. In addition, we are promoting urban agriculture, developing policy approaches to enhance and expand innovative projects. The scope of work also includes a variety of research projects, and convening local, state, and national groups along with philanthropy, policymakers, and community leaders to assess challenges and develop solutions.
We are searching for an individual with deep knowledge of healthy food access and with demonstrated experience in food policy and advocacy on the local, state, or national level and, who, in partnership with others, will have achieved significant policy impacts. Our ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, deep connections and access to broad professional networks and the ability to convene diverse constituencies. They should have a passion for improving the lives of low-income communities and communities of color and understand the connections between health and place. Additionally, we are looking for someone with strong communication skills, including facilitation and presentation skills. The associate director will be passionate, curious, team-oriented, able to work under tight deadlines, flexible, and dedicated to the PolicyLink mission. It is also important that our candidate possess the ability to work with others in a collegial team-building environment.

Essential Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be a key staff member of the PolicyLink Center for Health and Place. They will work in collaboration with other team members to develop and implement advocacy efforts to improve access to health food at the local, state, and national level. In addition, they will reach out to the field to identify needs and opportunities for research, capacity building, collaboration, and support to sustain existing efforts. As appropriate, the Associate Director will supervise staff, work across other teams within the organization, and develop reports, proposals, briefing papers and other materials, as indicated. They will build relationships with staff at key foundations, and among practitioners, policymakers, business leaders, and other stakeholders. As needed, the Associate Director will make presentations and represent the organization at various meetings, conferences, and other events. They will be responsible for conducting trainings, participating in research projects, and providing overall coordination and leadership. This position requires some travel.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Experience in public health and/or public policy. Minimum of 7 years of professional experience.
  • Advanced degree, such as MPP, MPA, MPH, or MSW or commensurate experience.
  • Experience with food access issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated experience in writing reports and articles.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research preferred, but not required.
  • Experience in coalition building, community engagement.
  • Supervision and management skills preferred, with strong leadership capacity.
  • Experience building relationships with, and providing technical support to, organizations and stakeholders.

Sr. Web Developer (Oakland, CA)

Position Overview: 

The Web Developer works collaboratively with communications and program staff in all of the PolicyLink offices to advance strategies and tools to achieve economic and social equity.

This position will be responsible for developing innovative Web-based applications for PolicyLink and our partners.  This person reports jointly to the Deputy Director of Communications and Associate Director, Information Systems. 

This position is located at our headquarters in Oakland, California.

Qualification Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge and familiarity with a range of modern web development tools and technologies including (but not limited to) Advanced HTML; CSS; PHP; Javascript; AJAX; XML and XSLT.
  • Verifiable experience with one or more of the following: Drupal, Wordpress,  Joomla, and/or other open-source and proprietary CMS (such as Blackbaud Sphere and EZ Publish); experience w/ optimization across browsers and platforms.
  • Experience with CRM platforms; familiarity with web data manipulation using data from a variety of databases. Any knowledge of web services is a plus.
  • Experience with platforms that allow for multi-server publishing and multiple format creation.
  • Experience using a variety of APIs for web application.
  • Basic experience with Adobe Photoshop and a familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Knowledge of mobile platforms such as iOS and Android (experience developing apps for mobile would be very valuable).
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of web analytics.
  • Knowledge of industry trends, technologies, and standards and ability to recommend and apply new technologies as necessary.
  • Skilled in usability principles and testing.
  • Project management skills—particularly the ability to successfully manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment, across multiple offices; this includes interfacing with and managing tech vendors.
  • Ability to develop all online properties within the image and identity guidelines of PolicyLink.

Development Director (Oakland, CA)

This professional-level position—available immediately—is an exciting opportunity to join the leadership of PolicyLink. PolicyLink seeks a Development Director to oversee and manage all development and fund-raising activities

Position Overview: 

Successful candidates will be values driven, self-motivated, resourceful, and have experience in running a successful development department for an organization with an annual budget of more than $10 million. The candidate must be able to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment that requires adaptability to shifting priorities, a keen sense of urgency, and a commitment to excellence. Candidates will need to demonstrate an aptitude for private philanthropy, individual donors, and government grant-making programs.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a development department of 2-3 staff
  • Develop and implement, in collaboration with the Executive Team and senior staff, a customized, broad-based resource development strategy to achieve and maintain long-term financial stability that includes foundation, individual, corporate giving, and government support
  • Write and edit proposals, reports, and funder correspondence
  • Oversee the submission of narrative and financial reports in accordance with funder guidelines with assistance from program and financial staff
  • Identify and secure new funding opportunities
  • Direct prospect research on new national, regional, and local sources of public/private support
  • Expand the PolicyLink base of individual donors

PolicyLink is looking for a highly skilled Program Assistant to assist the Associate Director and Senior Associate working within the Center for Health and Place. S/he must have a minimum of three years of solid administrative experience, prior experience working with foundations and/or government agencies, and a demonstrated ability to work on a team and a track record of accomplishments in a support capacity for busy executives.

The successful candidate will provide administrative, programmatic, and research support and will have exceptional organizational and communication skills, good people skills, be able to manage multiple projects, be motivated to take initiative, pay careful attention to detail, and follow projects all the way through to completion.
 
The Program Assistant is a non-exempt position.

The Program Assistant is an integral member of the program support team. S/he supports the mission of PolicyLink by supporting designated senior staff in their project work and issue area.

Additionally, the Program Assistant is part of the Operations Team at PolicyLink. While Program Assistants provide dedicated support to specific senior program staff members, they also function in other capacities and participate in other PolicyLink projects, as needed. Program Assistants have considerable responsibility for coordinating their work with the rest of the Operations Team and, through the Associate Director of Administration and Human Resources, with other Program Assistants.

Essential Responsibilities:

Administrative Support:

  • Provide administrative support to Associate Director and Senior Associate
  • Fact-finding, information gathering, and synthesizing for both general research functions and specific projects
  • Meeting and conference call coordination—inclusive of travel arrangements for multiple participants, logistics, and event planning
  • Note taking, correspondence, and required follow-up
  • Collecting and organizing relevant information about project activities
  • Photocopying, assembly, and distribution of documents
  • Customize and finalize contracts, using organizational templates, under the direction of supervisor
  • Plan, organize, and execute large mailings
  • Travel to provide logistical support at meetings and conferences (as needed)
  • Assist with general administrative work, telephones and front desk relief (as needed)

Qualification Skills:

  • Minimum three years' previous experience in challenging administrative support position required
  • Ability to communicate and interact comfortably and effectively with a diverse population, including foundations, government agencies and offices, and nationally recognized organizations—both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability and capacity to proofread and produce high quality documents in a timely manner
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and tact
  • Knowledge of standard office computer applications (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) and standard office equipment, including multiple line telephone systems
  • Knowledge of Internet, graphic, and database applications
  • Good communication and writing skills—including high proficiency in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Detail oriented, accurate, and timely with assigned tasks
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and complete multiple projects in a timely manner
  • Ability to take initiative, consult, share information, and ask questions as needed
