Fighting Childhood Asthma: How Communities Can Win

Overview

Provides an overview of current efforts to improve the prevention, tracking, diagnosis, and treatment of childhood asthma and accompanying opportunities for policy change. Asthma is a growing problem for children and families in California and in the nation as a whole. While children of all socioeconomic status contract asthma, it disproportionately affects low-income children, particularly African American and Latino children. Moreover, for uninsured and underinsured children, lack of access to care can exacerbate a vulnerable health status.

From Protest to Proposal: A Police-Community Relations Forum - Equitable Development Toolkit

Overview

Published in 2001, this report highlights proceedings from a convening held in Cincinnati to discuss promising police practices in cities across the nation and to explore possible application locally.  The goal was to bring together a diverse group of stakeholders to explore strategies for improving community-police relations; develop a shared understanding of community-centered police practices; and to develop an action agenda grounded in the the experience of local communities and police departments that have achieved some measure of sucess in addressing similar conditions.

This brief is based on the notion that college is possible not only for students who attend excellent primary and secondary schools but also those who struggle in under-­‐performing public schools. Using the Harlem Children’s Zone® (HCZ®) as a case study, it explores the theory and practice behind this approach; summarizes results, challenges, lessons learned, and recommendations for other communities interested in this approach; and offers examples of three students whose lives changed because of HCZ’s student support strategy.
