Transforming Our Housing Futures: The Movement for Social Housing

As the U.S. affordable housing crisis deepens, so does the demand for bold action towards safe, stable housing that enriches our lives, not wealthy investors. That’s where the movement for social housing comes in.

But what is social housing”? Together with tenant organizers, grassroots organizations, and partners across the country, we’ve been laying out a vision for Social Housing that is rooted in a powerful, tenant-led movement, and guided by the basic idea that housing is for the people who live in it.

Communities worldwide have already embraced social housing. People across the U.S. are demanding that our public housing system be protected and expanded, along with other models like cooperatives, land trusts, and more. These changes are not only necessary but achievable.

We’re excited to share this new video from the Alliance for Housing Justice on the basics of what social housing could look like for millions of renters in the U.S., and what it could look like if housing was a public good rather than a source of profit for landlords.
