Profile: Circle Food Store

Overview

The reopening of Circle Food Store in New Orleans is part of the city's commitment to improve the business and economic infrastructure of the Seventh Ward after the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina.  A predominately African American, low- to moderate-income community, many residents struggle to access healthy food. With funding from the New Orleans Fresh Food Retailer Initiative (FFRI) along with an Economic Development Fund grant from the city and a loan from the Louisiana Office of Community Development, Circle Food Store owner Dwayne Boudreaux was able to finance the reopening and renovation of Circle Foods and help create 65 full- and part-time jobs for the community with 95 percent of these positions filled by local residents.

GOOD Ideas for Cities: Marketing Healthy, Local Food

As part of GOOD Ideas for Cities New Orleans, a team created a campaign to showcase the diversity and availability of healthy foods. The team came up with an idea to co-brand all local produce as part of the "Grow NOLA" movement, using stickers and point-of-sale materials that would provide more information about the connection between eating locally and eating healthily. 

Startup grocer gets fresh-food loan

Overview

DaFresh Seafood and Produce Store has been awarded $117,000 by the New Orleans Fresh Food Retailer Initiative, which in partnership with Hope Enterprise Corp. and The Food Trust is providing loans to existing and startup grocers in underserved New Orleans communities.

This interactive map of New Orleans provides information about the status of health and well-being of the community including health, social and environmental domains and the drivers of that status. It also provides model practices and tools that support neighborhood associations’ and tracks changes in over time.

Circle Food Store awarded funding to reopen

Circle Food Store received a $1 million loan from the city's Fresh Food Retailer Initiative to open stores selling fresh produce in low-income neighborhoods. Officials hope the store's redevelopment will serve as a catalyst for rebuilding a robust community, generating taxes, discouraging blight and creating jobs.
