Overview

Hunts Point Produce Market, located in the South Hunts Bronx, receives premium fruits and vegetables daily from 49 states and 55 countries, and provides 60 percent of New York City's produce. Every day a fleet of trucks delivers the market's fresh food throughout the five boroughs, yet only a miniscule amount gets distributed to the South Bronx, a community underserved by traditional supermarkets and green grocers. This article discusses several city programs that are improving healthy food access in areas like the South Bronx and suggests improvements for greater impactful change.

More fruits, veggies for food stamp recipients goal of Minn. program

Overview

State officials are launching a pilot program to encourage food stamp recipients to eat more fruits and vegetables. Starting in June, food stamp customers at select grocery stores in Minnesota will get a $5 coupon for fruits and vegetables. They'll be able to use that coupon during their next visit to the grocery store. Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson expects the incentive will encourage people to try produce they haven't tried before.

Walkable Access to Healthy Food in Philadelphia, 2010‐2012

Overview

This report assesses and graphically depicts walkable access to healthy food retailers in Philadelphia for 2010 and 2012. It focuses additional attention on low‐income neighborhoods in which residents may have the fewest resources to purchase healthy foods and/or to travel to distant retailers. This analysis includes supermarkets, corner stores, convenience stores, farmers’ markets, and produce carts. Based on published research, each food retailer is assigned a score and service area reflecting its relative size, operating hours, and the availability and quantity of healthy foods for purchase.

Overview

Cohosted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Food Trust, a meeting was held to address the role of supermarkets in providing access to healthy affordable foods in communities and the role they play in reversing childhood obesity in lower - income and multi- ethnic communities.  The three goals of the meeting were to: 1) Connect (explore strategies that would help promote healthier diets for children and their familes) 2) Co - Create (generate and combine ideas for effective marketing strategies that would help consumers make healthier choices while meeting retailers' and manufacturers' business goals) 3) Contine (promote collaboration between food retailers and manufacturers and spread approaches that encourage healthy eating).

San Francisco Healthy Food Retail Program Proposed Legislation

Overview

While the City has taken important steps forward to promote healthy food retail, there is a need to centralize and coordinate City-wide strategies to recruit, maintain, and develop new healthy food  businesses, and ensure existing food businesses are fully utilizing economic incentives and technical support. This is the proposed legislation.
