Carceral Cycles of Harm: A Teach-in on the Violence Against Women Act

Tuesday, March 16

The People’s Coalition for Safety and Freedom held a teach-in and conversation about how undoing the harm of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is crucial in the fight to dismantle the 1994 Crime Bill.

We know that this country’s overreliance on the criminal legal system to address violence (and nearly all other social issues) leaves many people, including survivors, without any access to emergency response, accountability, or healing. Gender-based violence is a complex issue that cannot be addressed without difficult conversations and collective strategies that center the leadership of those who have been most harmed. Ultimately, carceral systems are themselves violent and cannot be part of any real solution to end violence.

This webinar discusses why we must move toward policies and practices that would instead foster healing, prevent harm, and promote safety.
